Restoring Elegance: A Journey Through the Renovation of a Historic Forest Park Home

Part III : The Breakfast Nook, Powder Room, and Family Room

The formal living room, while stunning, lacked connectivity to adjacent rooms. A new opening was introduced to create a seamless flow from the living room to the breakfast room, enhancing both circulation and usability. To elevate the transition, the hallway was paneled to cleverly conceal doors leading to a china and storage closet, as well as a new powder room.

For an added touch of sophistication, an arched ceiling was installed and painted in Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue, offering a captivating contrast and visual interest. In Progress: The Living Room

When Steve first laid eyes on the formal living room, he saw a canvas of potential beneath its modest appearance. Spanning the entire length of the home, from front to back, the living room was a blank slate, just waiting to be infused with new life and character. With ten-foot ceilings and original hardwood floors, the room already had the bones of grandeur; it just needed a touch of elegance and Steve’s visionary flair.

A Bright and Inviting Breakfast Room

The breakfast room is a delightful transformation from what was once part of the old kitchen space. V-groove paneling adorns the walls, creating a timeless yet approachable aesthetic. A concealed pantry door blends seamlessly into the paneling, maintaining the room’s clean lines.

Situated near the family room addition, this space serves as the perfect transition point. To enhance its functionality, a coat closet was added conveniently near the steps leading to the family room.

The New Powder Room: Modern Meets Classic

The newly added powder room is a study in understated luxury. Marble flooring and a white oak cabinet wrapped in Alabama White marble set a refined tone. Contemporary wall sconces provide illumination, and plans for wallpaper will add texture and character. This compact yet impactful space exemplifies how every detail matters in a thoughtful renovation.

A Cozy and Functional Family Room

As part of the home’s new addition, the family room exudes warmth and comfort while offering practical features for everyday living. The 12-foot ceilings are adorned with cedar beams and V-groove inserts, adding depth and natural texture. Bluestone floors enhance the room’s durability and aesthetic, while the walls—wrapped in V-groove paneling—tie the design together seamlessly.

The family room opens to a screened porch, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor connection. Thoughtful built-ins include a cabinet with a center panel that slides up to reveal a hidden television, with additional storage covered by wire mesh screens. Recessed paneled shutters frame the double-hung windows, marrying functionality with elegance.

Upstairs: Master and Guest Bedrooms

While the kitchen’s transformation is still on the horizon, the renovation continues upstairs, where the master and guest bedrooms await their turn. These spaces promise to retain the home’s historic charm while being thoughtfully updated to accommodate modern living.

A Testament to Thoughtful Design

Every step of this renovation has been a labor of love, with careful attention paid to preserving the home’s historic essence while enhancing its functionality and beauty. From concealed storage solutions to the thoughtful use of materials and finishes, this Forest Park home is a testament to the art of restoring elegance.
